Nate Reit is a dynamic performer, composer, and educator, based in New York City.
His diverse freelance schedule includes regular appearances on Broadway shows, symphony orchestras, brass quintets, creative jazz ensembles, and just about everything in between. Nate is a highly trained and versatile trombonist, bringing in-depth experience and the highest caliber proficiency to classical, jazz, and commercial playing. He is also an experienced doubler, performing regularly on bass trombone, alto trombone, tuba, and euphonium.
Career highlights include performances with renowned trumpeters Ray Vega, Lew Soloff, and Steve Jankowski, saxophonist Lenny Pickett, award-winning vocalist Kat Wright, and ensembles such as the Vermont Symphony Orchestra, Opera Company of Middlebury, Lyric Opera, Eastern Brass, and nationally-touring rock band, Gang of Thieves. Nate has performed as a leader and a sideman at festivals all over the country, including the Rochester International Jazz Festival, Stowe Jazz Festival, and Burlington Discover Jazz Festival.
Nate received his BM in 2009 from the Eastman School of Music, where he studied with Mark Kellogg and Dr. John Marcellus.
Nate has been writing and arranging since the age of 14, studying compositional techniques with Bill Dobbins, Dave Rivello, and Dave Douglas. He has composed, transcribed and arranged material for a variety of artists and ensembles, including Gang of Thieves, New Age Brass, Middlebury Union High School jazz ensemble (a recent big band commission), and assisted with orchestration for an upcoming musical.
In October 2022, Nate released his first album of all original compositions, “Collage,” with his contemporary jazz septet of the same name.
He has also arranged and performed the music of Trombone Shorty (and other artists) with his own 8-9 piece band, “Nate Reit and Friends,” with which he plays electric trombone and sings. He has an active YouTube channel that features many of his own compositions and arrangements as well.
As an educator, Nate brings a focus to improving the fundamentals of great brass playing, as well as developing musicianship and listening skills. He is currently the trombone instructor at Fordham University and substitute music and brass teacher at the Ethical Culture Fieldston School. Since 2013 he has held the position of Head of Brass at Kinhaven Music School Junior Session. Nate has taught and coached young musicians of all ages in many different settings, including Bloomingdale School of Music, Brooklyn Music School, Lagond Music School, New York’s Harmony Program, South Burlington High School, Frederick H. Tuttle Middle School, and the Vermont Youth Orchestra Association. He also served a semester teaching jazz & classical trombone and bass trombone at the University of Vermont.
Nate lives in Manhattan with his fiancée, Caeli, and their two cats.
